A rural town in Union County, NC, Unionville had a population of 5,929 in the 2010 US census. Unionville is a beautiful place to live and where many of our customers reside.

Water softener

Hard Water, we’ve all heard the term but do you really know what it is? Calcium and magnesium present in your water supply is what’s called “hard water”. It can dry out your hair, clog up your fixtures, decrease the lifespan of your appliances, give you eczema, turn your clothes a different color or cause your dishes to have white spots on the surfaces never allowing for that perfect shine. Unionville, NC has some extremely hard water, an easy way to determine if you need a filter is to call us. A softener removes these minerals through a process called ion exchange. In each softener, there are little plastic beads called resin. Attached to this resin are tiny salt molecules that will be exchanged with the minerals. Think of the salt as a less powerful magnet to the calcium and magnesium, when the minerals pass by they knock the salt out of the way and stick to the resin, known as ion exchange. As the magnesium and calcium build up it requires a washing to remove the minerals.  Softeners require a brine tank filled with salt in order to restore the system after a certain number of gallons have passed through. Each system is restored at different times because every water source has varying levels of hardness. When your water is tested it will be displayed in grains of hardness, the higher the grain the more salt required for the system.

  • Measured in Grains Per Gallon (GPG)
  • Soft: 0 – 3.5 GPG
  • Moderate: 3.5 – 7 GPG
  • Hard: 7 – 10.5 GPG
  • Very Hard: 10.5 GPG +

During the rejuvenation process, the outlet valve is closed and it begins pumping the highly concentrated salt throughout the water softener pelting the resin removing all of the magnesium and calcium replacing it with salt. During this process, the leftovers are dumped into a drain so the contents of the wash do not damage the area outside. This process happens continuously until you have to restore the salt in the brine tank. With this, a small amount of salt is added to your water supply, not nearly enough to notice a difference in taste, so you can rest assured that you’re getting the highest quality water possible from the softener.

Carbon Filter

Chemicals are part of our everyday lives at this point from cleaning supplies to gasoline. But do you want to be ingesting any such chemical into your body? Even if you have a Brita filter and drink everything after being filtered your body still absorbs chemicals like chlorine and other (VOC’s) Volatile Organic Compounds through the skin like a sponge when you bathe. The city of Unionville is required to add chlorine to your water supply in order to kill any harmful bacteria in the system. Many more chemicals are added to treat your water in order to protect you, these chemicals can give off a smell and taste you don’t want in your water. Carbon Filters rid your system of any chemical that may produce a smell or taste from the water giving you bottled water quality out of your tap. This filter uses active carbon acting as a sponge to absorb VOC’s from your water supply. When you zoom in on the active carbon it literally looks like a sponge except much finer and allows for much more adsorption. We can test your water here at Superior Plumbing and Drains, LLC, if you’d like to know what’s in your water call us at 704-289-6858. You can also book online here!

UV Filter

An Ultra Violet filter is harmless to humans while being very dangerous to small microorganisms. The UV light destroys the DNA of the bacteria or virus killing them in the process. While the sun also produces this UV light, the atmosphere acts as a barrier negating a large portion of the light. With a UV filter, it allows 100% of the power through, powerful enough to easily destroy viruses and bacteria before they enter your home.

Sediment Filter

One of the most basic filters that can be added to your home which is used on homes with a well system to prevent the sand like debris from clogging up your pipes. This acts like a net that catches anything bigger than a red blood cell (5 Micron), or about 30 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair, soo pretty dang small.

Reverse Osmosis Filter

The cleanest drinking water you can obtain is from a reverse osmosis filter. They get rid of everything from viruses, bacteria, salt, chlorine, anything bigger than a water molecule will not pass through its semi-permeable membrane. The only downside to an RO filter would be the time. When you have an RO filter it saves water in a tank to later be used. Depending on how much you want to spend is the only limit on RO filters. Some manufacturers sell whole house filters that are connected to a 500-gallon tank to be used when you are ready all the way to a 2-gallon tank that is under the sink. The only limit is time and money, these can range from under $1000 to well over $10000 easily depending on the type you want. Always consult with an expert before taking the plunge, we are here and eager to help you out!
